Svou nepotlačovanou energií a pohybem je každým kouskem o něco blíže k osvobození se a upoutá také využitím ohromného potenciálu běžných věcí. POZNÁMKA UMĚLKYNĚ
«Vždy jsem byla posedlá …sexuálními záležitostmi”. Moje o dost starší sestra se specializovala při studiích na psychologii, a tak jsem trávila dětství tajným nasáváním informací z jejích učebnic, obzvláště těch, které se zabývaly sexualitou. A ty vzpomínky se mi vybavily, když se mé pětileté dítě nedávno setkalo ve škole s první sexuální výchovou. Tehdy mi došlo, že je na čase, abych oprášila své vlastní znalosti z této oblasti.

VÝPOVĚĎ UMĚLKYNĚ
Moje umělecké vyjádření pramení ze zkoumání rozmanitosti identity, je to směsice intuitivní improvizace, choreografie a performativního umění. Pracuji s pojmy performativní alchymie a vědomé snění – využívám osobní minulost, současnou posedlost a budoucí touhu, abych vytvořila centrifugu pocitů z okamžiků v životě mém a očitých svědků. V dnešní době bychom mohli moji práci usouvstažnit se sochařstvím, kinematografií, veseohrou, hip-hopem, psychologií, dubem a komentářem společnosti.

Chameleon artist Dana Michel is hunting for a pulse and to widen the door to her sexual self. A piercing and unexpected look at the liberation of a body.

Do we ever stop needing sexual education? How can we learn to listen to our own instincts amidst the noise of how society tells us we should behave and the expectations of those in our proximity? Chameleon artist Dana Michel probes her personal history and scans the landscape around her on the hunt for a pulse. In order to access her full human potential, she must widen the door to her sexual self.

How do we reinitialize the body in sleep mode, repressed for its own survival? What tools do we use to dig up our buried parts? Dana Michel continues to dissect her identity by exploring zones of sexual limitations and conditioning. With raw energy and movement inching toward freedom and engaging the infinite potential of everyday objects, CUTLASS SPRING confirms the astonishing originality and innate humour of this artist, a 2017 Venice Biennial Silver Lion recipient. An unexpected, piercing look at the liberation of a body.

NOTE FROM THE ARTIST
« I’ve always been obsessed with…“sex stuff”. My much older sister majored in Psychology in University, and so I spent my childhood often sneakily pouring over her textbooks, always particularly fascinated with her human sexuality textbooks. These memories came flooding back this past year when my five-year old started receiving special sexual education workshops at his daycare. It made me think that it was time to renew my own sex ed knowledge.

ARTIST STATEMENT
An amalgam of intuitive improvisation, choreography, and performance art, my artistic practice is rooted in exploring the multiplicity of identity. I work with notions of performative alchemy and lucid dreaming – using personal history, current preoccupations, and future desires to create an empathetic centrifuge of live moments between myself and witnesses. Today, my work can perhaps be described by some of its influences and inhabitations: sculpture, cinematography, comedy, hip-hop, psychology, dub, and social commentary
